John 6:41-71
Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” – John 6:68
Yesterday’s sermon was on the topic of Jesus the Bread of Life. Note that it is the “Bread of Life,” not the “bread of the body.” During that time, people sought Jesus because they hoped He would provide physical bread. However, what Jesus truly offers is the Bread of Life. His ultimate concern is that people may find life in Him.
l What is ife? Why do human beings need the Bread of Life—Jesus? In His exchange with the crowd in Galilee, Jesus repeatedly emphasized one point: Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. (Verses 49, 58) Though this statement is harsh, it is the truth! People need food to survive, but even with food, they cannot escape death.
l While food can address the immediate needs of the body, it cannot fundamentally solve the problem of human existence. The greatest enemy of life is not hunger or the lack of food, but death—separation from God, the source of life. Death is the root of humanity’s ultimate problem. Therefore, in His exchange with the crowd, Jesus pointed to the most essential truth: if a person desires life, they must receive the Bread of Life that came down from heaven—Jesus.
l Without being connected to the source of life, no matter how hard a person tries, they can only prolong their lives temporarily but cannot overcome death. Our Lord Jesus repeatedly emphasized that He is the Bread of Life, and whoever eats this bread will live forever. (Verse 51) How does Jesus solve humanity’s dilemma? Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” (Verse 53) Here, “eating and drinking” refers to believing in Jesus’ body and blood offered on the cross for our sins. Only by accepting the grace of salvation that Jesus offers can we receive the life He gives.
l When Jesus shifted the conversation from physical bread to the Bread of Life, many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him. Jesus then asked the twelve apostles, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.” (Verses 66-69) Brothers and sisters, for what reason do you believe in and follow Jesus today? What do you desire for God to accomplish for you? Do you long for life more than worldly pleasures, fame, wealth, or health? Are you willing to let the Bread of Life satisfy you and guide you on the path to eternal life?
l Prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, Thank You for willingly obeying the Father’s will, coming into this world to offer Yourself for our sins, and giving us what we truly need—life. I confess that, like the crowd back then, I often seek You to fulfill my physical and emotional needs. Forgive me and transform my heart. Open my eyes to see my true need—to be with You and to find life and fulfillment in You. In Your name, I pray. Amen.
