John 20:30-31

John 20:30-31

but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. – John 20:31

We thank God for giving us the four Gospels, through which we can know Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world!

Among the four Gospels, the Gospel of John, written by the Apostle John, records seven miracles performed by the Lord Jesus:
• Turning water into wine at Cana (2:1–11)
• Healing the royal official’s son (4:46–54)
• Healing the lame man by the Pool of Bethesda (5:1–9)
• Feeding the five thousand (6:1–14)
• Walking on water (6:16–21)
• Healing the man born blind (9:1–7)
• Raising Lazarus from the dead (11:1–44)

The Apostle John said, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book.” (v.30) John carefully chose these miracles with the main purpose of leading the Jews scattered throughout the Roman Empire to believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ (*Messiah in Hebrew). He is the eternal Word of God, who “became flesh and dwelt among us.” Throughout the Gospel of John, we see various people making such confessions. Here are two examples: First, Nathanael said in his conversation with Jesus, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God…” (1:49) Then, the Samaritans said to the Samaritan woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.” (4:42)

John wrote, “But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (v.31) When John wrote this Gospel, the Lord Jesus he followed and served had already ascended and was seated at the right hand of God the Father (Hebrews 8:1). John deeply knew that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. He recorded “these” so that his readers would also believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. John’s purpose was not simply to increase spiritual knowledge, but that by believing in Jesus, we may “have life in His name”! John once wrote, “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:11–12)

The world believes that as long as people are alive, they have life. But the Bible tells us: only those who have the Son of God have life. Because we believe in Jesus, through His name—meaning through who Jesus is and everything about Him—we are reconciled with the God who created us, receive eternal life, live in His great love, and partake in all the fullness found in Him!

Thank You, Jesus! Because of Your name, we have life!

Prayer:
Dear Abba Father, thank You for giving us Your only beloved Son, Jesus! He was sent by You, the Word made flesh. He performed miracles and revealed divine power. He accomplished the task You have entrusted Him. We ask You, Father God, to help those who have gone astray to believe that Jesus is the Savior who can redeem us, so that through His name, we may receive the abundant life found in You! In the victorious name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
