In today’s passage, the Lord reveals His plans to Abraham, showing that He does not hide what He is about to do. God’s plan is this: “Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him” (v. 18). God’s blessing was never meant for personal enjoyment alone, but to flow through His people to the world. To be blessed is to be called to bless others.
The passage also emphasizes that God’s blessing would continue through Abraham’s descendants. They were to “keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice” (v. 19), so that God’s promises would be fulfilled. Brothers and sisters, our lives are not meant to be lived only for ourselves. We are called to be channels of blessing to others. Jesus taught, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:16). Through good works that reflect God’s character, we glorify Him and become a means of blessing for others.
Looking back at Foochow Methodist Church’s history, we also see how God has blessed our community through the church. Many of our members once lived near the church and experienced His grace and salvation here. Today, God continues to call us to pass on this blessing to others.
The mission of the church is twofold: first, to receive God’s blessing into our lives; and second, to share that blessing with the world. Our 128th Anniversary theme this year, “Blessed to Be a Blessing”, reminds us that whether as individuals or as a congregation, our responsibility is not only to enjoy God’s grace but also to reflect His glory and bring the light of the gospel into every corner of society.
Reflection:
– Do I recognize that being blessed also means being entrusted with God’s mission?
– How am I living out righteousness and justice in my daily life, so that others may experience God’s blessing through me?
Prayer:
Loving Father, thank You for pouring out Your abundant blessings on us. Thank You for working out Your purposes in our lives. Help us never to forget that blessing comes with a mission: to become a channel of Your grace to others. Grant us wisdom and courage to walk in righteousness and truth, to be salt and light in the world. May our lives bring glory to You, and may every brother and sister in Foochow Methodist Church, as we celebrate 128 years, renew this calling to be blessed to be a blessing, until the day of Christ’s return. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
