In this passage, Paul reveals to the Corinthians the true nature of the Christian life: when we face the challenges of life, we must not rely on our own strength or emotions, but on the power of God. Spiritual warfare is not something that only takes place in the unseen realm. It deeply affects every aspect of our daily lives, particularly in relationships, ministry challenges, and the trials we encounter.

Paul writes, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh” (v. 3). Here, “the flesh” refers to our tendency to handle difficulties by depending on our limited wisdom, emotional reactions, and human strength. In simple terms, responding “according to the flesh” is relying on ourselves instead of seeking God’s wisdom and power.

For example, in conflicts at work or at home, we often respond with anger, frustration, or impulsive words. These reactions may make us feel as though we are “controlling” the situation in the moment, but they usually intensify the conflict and deepen the hurt. A spiritual response looks very different. Instead of reacting out of emotion, we turn to prayer, rely on God’s wisdom, and choose gentleness, patience, and understanding to resolve conflict.

To rely on God’s power means we must set aside our self-reliance and lean on His strength and guidance. This does not mean we stop trying, but it means we recognise that only God’s power can break through situations that seem impossible to overcome.

Toward the end of this passage, Paul speaks about obedience. Obedience to God is the key to spiritual warfare. It is the intentional surrender of our thoughts, actions, and decisions to God’s authority.

In daily life, obedience may mean choosing forgiveness over insisting on being right; choosing patience over reacting in anger; and choosing humility over self-protection. When we obey God’s leading, we are choosing to trust His wisdom above our own. It is in this posture of surrender that we experience God’s victory in the struggles of life.

Reflection:
When you face challenges, do you tend to rely first on your own methods and strength? In which areas do you need to rely more on God’s wisdom and power? Are there parts of your life where obedience to God is difficult? Perhaps a strained relationship or a ministry challenge? Are you willing to bring these before God in prayer and seek His guidance?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being with me in every challenge. Help me not to rely on my own strength but to fight every battle with Your power. Teach me to obey You in every decision, and to put aside my pride and self-reliance. May my life be rooted in Your wisdom and love, so that Your glory may be revealed through me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
