Isaiah 42:1–9

I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness;I will take you by the hand and keep you;I will give you as a covenant for the people,a light for the nations- Isaiah 42:6

When we think about “”Be the light””, we may imagine something bright and impressive—something that attracts attention and cannot be missed. But today’s passage in Isaiah gives us a very different picture of God’s Servant. “Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights;” (v.1a).

Although God’s Servant is chosen, upheld and filled with His Spirit, He is sent to bring justice to the nations, and He does not do so by shouting, forcing or crushing others. “a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;” (v.3).

What a surprising picture of God’s light. Jesus, the fulfilment of this prophecy, came not only for the strong and successful, but for those who were bruised, weary and barely holding on. A bruised reed is fragile; a smouldering wick is almost extinguished. Yet Jesus does not discard them. He treats them with patience and mercy.

Perhaps this is also what it means for us to “Be the Light.” The world around us is filled with people who are bruised and whose light is flickering. Some carry wounds that others cannot see. Some are discouraged by failure. Some are burdened by guilt, loneliness or disappointment. Some may look fine on the outside but are quietly struggling within.

Our calling is not to become a spotlight that draws attention to ourselves. We are called to reflect Christ’s light; to bring His presence, compassion and hope to people who are walking in darkness.

God says to His Servant in Isaiah 49:6, “I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth”. The purpose of the light is not to remain where it is. It is meant to go out. And what does this light do? “to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.” (v.7).

This is the mission of God: to bring people out of darkness and into His light. As we seek to “Be the Light” in this darkened world, perhaps we can begin with something simple. Look around us. Who is hurting? Who is discouraged? Who may feel unseen or forgotten? Who needs someone to listen, encourage or simply walk alongside them? We may not be able to change their circumstances, but we can bring the gentle presence of Christ into their darkness.

The light we carry is not our own. We receive it from Christ, the true Light of the world. And as we remain close to Him, may His light shine through us.

Reflection:
1. Who around me may be like a “bruised reed” or “smoldering wick” who needs the gentle love and hope of Christ?
2. What is one simple way I can bring Christ’s light to that person today?

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, thank You that You came as the Light of the world. Thank You that You do not crush the bruised or extinguish the faint flame, but come to us with mercy and grace. Fill us with Your Spirit and help us to reflect Your light. Open our eyes to those around us who are hurting, discouraged or living in darkness. Use us to bring hope, compassion and Your salvation to others. May Your light shine through us, so that others may see You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
