I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. – John 8:12

The passage just before today’s reading records Jesus’ dealing with the woman caught in adultery, who was brought by the Jewish leaders in order to test Jesus. When instead exposed their hypocrisy, the leaders began to attack his testimony. This was how it was for Jesus. Being the Light of the World did not mean that Jesus was a popular hero. Often he did things that upended the Jewish customs, enraging those who were in power. The Pharisees questioned his authority and challenged his actions at every turn. When they couldn’t trap him, their anger hardened to resentment, jealousy, and ultimately, a plot to kill him.

Light is rarely welcomed by a world accustomed to darkness. Light exposes hidden evils, reveals masked sins, brings what is broken, neglected, inconsistent to attention. When given a choice, the human heart naturally chooses to shun the light of gospel in favour of comfort and conformity to the dark world.

When we resolve to shine Christ’s light in our family, workplace, or community, we need to remember the path Jesus walked . Expect to be tested. Prepare to be challenged, misunderstood, or even rejected. When you turn the world’s self-serving priorities upside down to practice righteousness and mercy, you may stir the anger of those around you. You may face quiet plots to push you to the margins. As faithful disciples, we cannot expect a smoother path than the one our Master trod.

However, we can take courage and stand firm. When Jesus was challenged, his answer was this: “”I know where I come from and where I am going… The Father who sent me bears witness about me.”” We are not alone in our trials. Our heavenly Father sees our obedience and our Savious promises us, “”In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world”” (John 16:33).

Reflection:
Are you enduring opposition today simply for standing firm in God’s righteousness? Have you felt sidelined or isolated because you refused to let your light be hidden by the darkness around you? Take heart: Jesus knows every step of this valley, for He walked it first. The Holy Spirit dwells within you today, imparting the wisdom, grace, and courage you need to remain steadfast and faithful.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to be the Light that no darkness can extinguish. When standing for your truth brings trials, anchor our hearts in your unchanging presence and promise of victory. Grant us the courage so that we will be unwavering in our witness, knowing our lives are held securely in Your hands. Teach us to respond to hostility with Your wisdom and love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
