Isaiah 1:1–9
“Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.” – Isaiah 1:2

“Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken. Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.” (verse 2)
When we read this verse, we feel the depth of God’s grief and disappointment.
He is not speaking to strangers. He is speaking to His own children, the ones He raised and loved with His own hands. He saved them, protected them, and provided for them. Yet now He describes His children like this. “The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s crib, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” (verse 3)
This is a heavy thing to hear. Even an ox knows its master, but God’s own people no longer know the One who saved them.
To “not know” here does not mean ignorance. It means the relationship has slowly grown distant. They still offered sacrifices and worshipped. But their hearts had already begun to drift away from God.
This is a reminder for us too.
We may have believed in the Lord for many years. We may know the Bible well, pray often, and attend every gathering. We may have once walked very closely with God. But closeness in the past does not mean closeness today. If our spiritual life stops growing, it slowly slips backward. If we stop drawing near to God, our hearts drift further from Him without us even noticing.
People rarely leave God all at once. More often, life simply becomes comfortable, and the heart slowly fills with other things. Busyness, pleasure, entertainment, career, family, even church ministry can quietly crowd out our time with God, until our hearts drift further and further away. Our outward faith may look unchanged, but our inward longing for God quietly fades.
This is why God cries out to His people who are drifting away. “Hear! Give ear!”
This is a rebuke, but it is also tender concern. It is a warning, but it is also a wake up call. God rebukes because He still cares. God calls out because He still longs for us to return to Him.
Perhaps today, God is waking us up too.
Do not let comfort put us to sleep. Do not let busyness drown out God’s voice. Do not let past spiritual experiences replace our relationship with Him today. Let us hear. Let us give ear.

Is my heart slowly drifting away from God? Where do I need to “give ear” again today? “Lord, what do You want to say to me today?”
Prayer:
Dear God, wake up my sleeping heart. Help me not only to remember how close I once walked with You, but to come to You again today. Let me hear Your voice. Let me long for You, love You, and follow You once more. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
