If you have ever grown a plant yourself, you will understand what it is like to hope and wait for it to grow. You find the right place for it, water and fertilise it regularly, and watch closely for any yellowing leaves. Because you have put so much care into it, you cannot help but feel disappointed when it fails to grow or slowly begins to wither.
Isaiah compares God’s people to a vineyard. The owner, who represents God, chose a fertile hillside, dug up the ground and cleared away the stones. He planted the best vines, built a watchtower and carved out a winepress. He prepared everything the vineyard needed and eagerly waited for it to produce good grapes. Instead, it yielded only wild grapes that were sour and bitter.
God was disappointed not simply because His people had broken a few laws, but because they had received His abundant grace and yet their lives remained unchanged. He looked for justice but found violence and bloodshed. He looked for righteousness but heard the cries of those who were suffering. Outwardly, they continued to worship God, but in their daily lives, people were being hurt by their selfishness and injustice.
We can be like them too. We read the Bible, pray, attend church, listen to sermons, and join a small group. We may appear to be living godly lives, yet we are impatient with those closest to us. We thank God for His grace and provision, yet turn a blind eye to people in need. We expect others to treat us fairly, yet make decisions based only on what is convenient for us. The fruit of our lives is seen not only when we gather for church, but also in every choice we make each day.
This passage is both a warning and a reminder that the owner still cares deeply for His vineyard. He points out the bad fruit in our lives because He is calling us to turn back to Him. We cannot produce good fruit by our own effort. Only by returning to Christ and allowing Him to prune and renew our lives can we live with righteousness, mercy and holiness.
God’s grace not only plants us in His vineyard; it also enables our lives to bear fruit that pleases Him.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your grace and for always caring for me. Please show me the attitudes and actions in my life that are not pleasing to You. Help me to turn away from them and come back to You. Change me from within, so that Your grace will bear fruit in the way I live each day. May my life reflect Your justice, mercy, and holiness, and may others see Your goodness through me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
