1 Peter 2:4–10

Growing up in the countryside, I often had chances to watch the villagers build their own houses. They would first clear a plot of land, then dig the foundation. Once the foundation was dug, the craftsmen would select the squarest and most solid stone they had prepared beforehand and set it at the corner. This is what the Bible calls the cornerstone. Only after the cornerstone was firmly set could they begin building around it.
The apostle Peter describes the church as a living spiritual house, with Christ as its cornerstone and every believer as a “”living stone”” within it. We are therefore not isolated individuals, but are joined and fitted together around Christ, being built up by God into His dwelling place.
Yet in an age that increasingly emphasises individualism, it is easy for us to forget that faith was never only about “”me and the Lord Jesus.”” It is also about “”us being joined together in Christ.”” We often think that as long as our own relationship with Christ is good, that is enough. We read the Bible, pray, attend worship, and then simply continue with our own lives…
But Peter reminds us that a single stone cannot make a house. The Lord Jesus did not choose us to be a lone, isolated stone. He placed us into His household, so that we would be joined to other believers, supporting and working alongside one another, together building His church.
The apostle tells us clearly to understand our identity in Christ. “”But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”” (1 Peter 2:9)
This holy identity comes from God’s mercy. We were once rough, discarded stones, but the Lord Jesus dug us out of the rubbish heap, removed our stubbornness and rebellion, and carefully shaped us, so that the Holy Spirit could make us vessels fit for His use.
This holy identity carries a shared mission. Like every other believer who has been called, I too have received a calling from the Lord “”to proclaim His goodness,”” so that more people may come to know Christ.
This has been God’s purpose from beginning to end. This week our church will celebrate the 129th anniversary of its founding. On this meaningful occasion, we especially remember the faithful believers who came before us, who loved the Lord and held fast to their identity and calling, and who left behind so many precious spiritual legacies for our church. Today, the call to “”proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light”” has been placed into each of our hands. How will we take up this baton and run our own portion of the race well?
Reflection:
How does today’s passage help me see my relationship with the Lord and with my brothers and sisters? The Lord Jesus calls us to build His church together. How does this truth help me work alongside my brothers and sisters, so that more people can come to know God’s goodness?
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, You are our Rock, our ever-present strength and help. As we walk through life, Your guidance gives our lives direction and purpose. Thank You for choosing us and sending us out to proclaim Your goodness. Help us to always remember our identity, and to work alongside our brothers and sisters, so that Your name may be lifted up in this world and more people may see God’s love through us. We pray this in the precious name of the Lord Jesus. Amen!
