Isaiah 35:1-10
“Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” – Isaiah 35:4

The prophet Isaiah paints a beautiful picture of the salvation brought by God: the wilderness will bloom, weak hands will be strengthened, and the timid will hear: “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” (v. 4) “The eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.” (vv. 5–6) This vision brings great comfort and hope! It stands in stark contrast to the judgment described in chapter 34.
This beautiful vision consists of three parts:
A brand-new environment (vv 1–2);
A brand-new life (vv 3–7);
A brand-new path (vv 8–10). Yes! Everything is brand-new!
At that time, the kingdom of Judah faced pressure and adversity from surrounding nations (such as the threat from Assyria). “The wilderness, the dry land, and the desert” (v 1) were all places the Israelites passed through after leaving Egypt and crossing the Red Sea (Exodus 15:22). The prophet Isaiah used “the wilderness, the dry land, and the desert” to symbolise desolate, hopeless human circumstances and the condition of the Israelites in exile. Faced with darkness and evil forces, people are prone to falter and lose their faith. In fact, it is not only the Israelites who experience this. Today, when we face life’s hardships, we sometimes lose the courage and strength to move forward, and even our resolve to trust in God grows weak.
The Scripture says: “The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God.” (v 2b) “Lebanon, Carmel, and Sharon” are all fertile and prosperous regions along the Mediterranean coast. Lebanon is renowned for its towering trees, while Carmel and Sharon are celebrated for their fertility and beauty. Amid the desolation and despair of human suffering, and the hardships and exile of captivity, the glorious God promises His people that He will bestow abundance upon the dry land! What exhilarating good news this is! God’s grace transforms desolation into vitality! God’s salvation brings renewal and offers hope to the weary and fearful.
The people redeemed by the LORD live with new life in a new environment. Before them lies a brand-new path! “And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.” (v 8) The redeemed people have the strength to press on; they walk on a path set apart as holy. The defiled are those who reject God’s grace; naturally, they may not travel on this holy path. “Even if they are fools, they shall not go astray” once again reveals God’s great love and abundant grace. God will ensure they reach their destination, regardless of human ability or talent. It is all God’s free grace of redemption!
“And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” (v 10) People of the world are often trapped in sorrow and sighing, but what God promises is gladness and joy, and a brand-new life! How will people choose?
Reflection:
God can grant us a new environment, a new life, and a new path. Even if our circumstances remain the same, a renewed life and perspective can transform our environment, enabling us to walk the path of sanctification with a renewed spirit and experience God’s grace more deeply.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for preparing the grace of redemption for us! Thank You for Your immense grace that transforms lifelessness into vitality! Thank You for Your salvation that brings renewal and hope to the weary and fearful! Forgive us for often neglecting You and Your abundant grace and love, habitually allowing ourselves to live in lifelessness, without seeking renewal, and in weariness and fear. We ask that You deeply imprint upon our hearts the vision You reveal to us today through the prophet Isaiah, so that we may walk the path of a set-apart life in You, with hearts filled with gratitude, reverence, and a vision for life found in You. We pray this in the victorious name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
