Isaiah 26:1-9

Every time we celebrate National Day or welcome the New Year, we often express our hopes for peace, prosperity and a better future. Yet the present can look very different, with uncertainty, disappointment and things beyond our control.
Isaiah 26 speaks to God’s people in just such a situation. They too were waiting for a better future. They were surrounded by powerful nations and oppressive rulers, and their present circumstances were far from peaceful. Yet Isaiah begins with a song of celebration: “In that day” (v.1). He looks ahead to the day when God will establish His city, bring down the proud and secure His people.
There is a beautiful tension between the “now” and the “then.” God’s people were still living in a troubled world, yet they could sing about the victory God had promised, even though they had not yet seen its fullness.
This is also how we live as Christians. Christ has already come, died and risen again, securing our salvation. Yet we are still waiting for the day when He will return and make all things new. We continue to live in a broken world, where suffering and uncertainty remain.
Christian hope does not mean pretending everything is fine. We can grieve the pain of the “now,” celebrate what God has already done, and trust what He has promised to do. The darkness of the present does not have the final word.
In this tension, Isaiah gives us this promise: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” (v.3) God does not promise that we will have no troubles while we wait. He promises to keep in peace those who remain steadfast in their trust in Him. Our peace is not found in having a trouble-free present, but in knowing that God is faithful and that our future is secure in Him.
Isaiah continues, “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.” (v.4). Earthly powers may appear strong, and our circumstances may seem uncertain, but they will not last forever. The Lord alone is our everlasting Rock.
Perhaps today things do not look the way we hoped they would. But we can still celebrate. We can celebrate what God has already done for us in Christ, give thanks for His faithfulness in the past, and look forward with confidence to what He has promised for the future. We live in the “now,” but we also belong to the “then.” And while we wait, we can trust with hope.

What tends to disturb my peace or weaken my trust in God? What can I celebrate today because of what God has already done, and what He has promised to do?
Prayer:
Lord, our everlasting Rock. When the present feels uncertain or gloomy, help us to remember what You have already done for us in Christ and to look forward to all that You have promised. Keep our hearts and minds steadfast in You, and give us Your perfect peace as we wait upon You. Help us to celebrate Your faithfulness even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
