In today’s passage, Mark cuts right to the chase. “”The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God”” (Mark 1:1). From the very first line, Mark makes his purpose clear. He wants us to know who Jesus is and why His coming is good news.

He then introduces John the Baptist, echoing the words of the prophet Isaiah. John is the voice crying in the wilderness, “”Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight”” (Mark 1:3). For generations, God’s people had waited for Him to keep His promise to comfort them and to come to them. That long wait is now over. The comfort promised centuries earlier is being fulfilled as Jesus comes to His people.

John prepares the way by calling people to repentance. Crowds from Judea and Jerusalem went out to the wilderness to be baptised by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Repentance is more than feeling sorry for what we have done wrong. It is turning away from sin and turning back to God, making room in our lives for Him to rule.

Yet John never makes himself the focus. He knows his role is simply to point others to the One coming after him. “”After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie”” (Mark 1:7). Untying a master’s sandals was a task for the lowliest servant, yet John does not see himself worthy even of that. He baptises with water as a sign of repentance, preparing hearts to receive Jesus. But Jesus will baptise with the Holy Spirit. John can call people to turn back to God, but only Jesus can truly cleanse, forgive, and make them new.

In the same way, our lives and witness should direct attention away from ourselves and toward Jesus. It is easy to want people to notice our knowledge, our service, or our goodness. John reminds us that we are only the voice. Jesus is the message. Whether we speak to a friend, serve a neighbour, or simply live faithfully at home and at work, our aim is that others would see Him more clearly.

Reflection:
Is there an area of my life where I have been feeling sorry but have not yet turned back to God? In my life and in my interactions with others, am I drawing attention to myself or pointing others to Jesus?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to save us. Search my heart and show me where I need to turn away from sin and return to You. Help me to make room in my life for You to rule. Like John, help me to be humble and to point others to Jesus rather than to myself. May my life reflect Your grace. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
