“Your God reigns.” – Isaiah 52:7

Isaiah paints a scene of joyful anticipation. A messenger comes running over the mountains, and what makes his feet beautiful is the news he carries: “Your God reigns.” The watchmen sing for joy together, even the waste places of Jerusalem are told to break forth into singing, and the Lord has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. It is a deliverance not hidden away, but shown to the whole world.

But the exiles are not home yet. While they wait for the promise to become reality, God’s word to His people is not only “rejoice,” but also “purify yourselves” (v. 11). The reason for purity is that they are carrying the sacred vessels of the LORD.

After seventy years, Babylon had become familiar, and its customs and comforts must have felt normal. Some of the exiles were born in Babylon, so that was all they knew.

Many of us know that feeling. We wait for Christ’s return while living in a world that quietly shapes our habits, our words, and what we think is worth chasing.

But God’s call to holiness is not a harsh demand to scrub ourselves clean by our own effort. It’s a reminder of what we carry. The exiles held vessels meant for worship, and we, too, carry something holy. Scripture says our bodies are temples and our lives are living sacrifices for the Lord’s use. We have been given the precious gift of the gospel to proclaim with our words and lives.

Holiness is not about being separate for its own sake. Being untainted by the world does not mean hiding from it. Being pure and holy means being fit for His purposes, set apart and clean because we carry something precious. It means being in the world without being shaped by it, so that our values, speech, habits, and priorities show whose we are.

Reflection:
Is there a “Babylon habit” you’ve grown comfortable with, something that doesn’t fit someone who carries the Lord’s holy vessels? What would it look like to lay it down today, trusting that He walks before you and behind you?

Prayer:
Soon-coming King, remind me whose I am and what I carry. Show me what to leave behind, and keep me pure and untainted in this world even as I wait for Your return. May I be found faithful in proclaiming the good news of Your salvation in every way I can, for You are the Lord who reigns over all. Amen.
