From the very beginning, the Bible declares that every human being bears the image of God. Genesis 1:27 tells us, “God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them”. This fundamental truth tells us the source of our worth and dignity. We are not accidents of nature, but intentional creations of a loving Creator God.

In Psalm 139, David marvels at this wonderful truth. He reflects on how God’s hand was intimately involved in his creation, knitting him from conception in his mother’s womb. The all-seeing and all-powerful God sees even in the most hidden places inside the womb, and He is also at work there, shaping every detail of who we are.

David responds in worship, singing, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (v14) Even with his limited understanding of the human anatomy, he was filled with awe at the wonders of the human body. Today, with all our scientific knowledge, we have even more reason to be amazed! Every heartbeat, every breath, and every cell testifies to the wisdom and power of God.

In verse 15, David continues the imagery of God intricately weaving our very person, just as a weaver skillfully weaving different colours of threads into a beautiful pattern. God was at work, weaving together bones, muscles, and spirit, creating a unique masterpiece of a person, known and loved by Him.

From our conception and growth in the womb, and through our daily lives, our God is sovereign and sustains us all. Before we took our first breath, God had already written the story of our lives. Each day of our lives, every joy and sorrow, our very purpose, was known to Him. What a comforting thought, that our lives are not random or unnoticed, but carefully planned and guided by our Creator, to shape us into who He wants us to be.

This passage reminds us of the immense value that God places on each one of us. Sometimes we may feel that our lives, or even our bodies, with their imperfections and flaws, are worth less than those of others around us. But God reminds us that He knows us before we were even born, and He loves us and has ordained our days. Whether young or old, healthy or frail, our worth is found not in what we do or what our bodies look like, but in whose image we bear.

Reflection:
How does knowing that you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” change the way you see yourself and others? Do you trust that the God who designed you also holds each of your days in His loving hands?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father God, I thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made by You. You knew me even before I was born, and You have ordained the days of my life. Help me to find my worth in belonging to You, and not in the physical things that I can see. Lord, help me also to see others around me as wonderful images of You and to love them as You do. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
