In Matthew 5:43–48, the Lord Jesus gives us an extremely challenging command. “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you… You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” This passage raises love to a level beyond human instinct. Jesus points out that if we only love those who love us, we are no different from the world. True heavenly love is unconditional and complete. As we often pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,” we are reminded to especially accept those who have hurt us.
This teaches us that God’s love and forgiveness are closely tied to our own love and forgiveness. If we want to receive God’s forgiveness and His complete love, we must let go of what others owe us.
Consider a murderer. From a human point of view, loving such a person seems almost impossible. Such a crime brings deep pain and anger, and that is only natural. Yet Jesus’ teaching breaks through human logic. The Father’s love reaches even the darkest person. His forgiveness can reach any sinner who truly repents. When we pray “forgive us our debts,” we are also reminding ourselves. Since God can forgive the wrongs we have committed when we truly confess and repent before Him, are we willing to let go of what others owe us, even if that person is a murderer? True forgiveness does not deny the hurt. It chooses to let God’s love overcome hatred. Only His love can free us from what binds our hearts and set us free.
Love and forgiveness are one. Both make us more like our heavenly Father. The “perfect” that Jesus speaks of does not mean flawless. It means continually learning to be like the Father in love and forgiveness. Prayer moves us to put this teaching into practice. When we ask God to forgive our debts, we are also reminding ourselves to forgive others’ debts, and to love all who are made in God’s image and likeness. Prayer is not abstract. It moves us to practice forgiveness in daily life. God has given us the Holy Spirit, so that we do not rely on our own natural strength but on the Spirit’s power to overcome our limits in this struggle, for what is impossible with man is possible with God.

When you think of those who have hurt you, are you willing to pray for them, willing to let God lead you to love and forgive them?
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, Your love goes beyond what we can imagine. Your forgiveness reaches sinners who repent. Lord Jesus, You taught us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. This is hard for me. I confess I often love only those who are good to me. I find it hard to accept those who hurt me. Give me the power of the Holy Spirit. Help me let go of what others owe me. Help me learn to love and forgive as You do. Let Your love flow through us, even toward those we find hardest to forgive. May we live out forgiveness and love, and be witnesses of Your love. In the victorious name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
