Numbers 20
“Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” – Numbers 20:8

In this passage, the Israelites once again face a difficult situation: there is no water, the environment is harsh, and the people are growing restless. Adding to this, Miriam has just passed away, and the whole community is still under a shadow of grief. Under such pressure, the people begin to complain again, and even Moses, their leader, loses control of his emotions.
God had already given a clear instruction: speak to the rock, and water would flow. Yet in his anger, Moses struck the rock twice with his staff and spoke impulsively. Water still came out, and the immediate problem seemed resolved. But God pointed out that Moses had not trusted Him or honoured Him as holy before the people.
This is a sobering reminder: just because something “works” does not mean it is done in the right way. When we are tired, frustrated, and under pressure, we tend to rely on our own methods instead of quietly listening to God.
Today, we live in a pressurising world. Global instability, economic uncertainty, and Singapore’s fast-paced, high-demand society make it easy to become anxious and restless, often without realizing how much external pressures drive us.
This passage reminds us that, especially in uncertain times, we must remember that God is with us. He is not only the One who helps us “solve problems,” but the sovereign and faithful God who is worthy of our honour.
God still provided. Water flowed from the rock, and the people were not abandoned. This shows His faithfulness. Yet at the same time, God cares deeply about our posture before Him. In critical moments, do we still place Him first and respond in faith, or are we driven by our emotions?
Perhaps you are in your own “wilderness” right now, facing pressures in life, uncertainty about the future, or inner anxiety. Ask God to help you, in such moments, not just to rush to fix things, but to slow down and respond in faith, honouring Him and trusting in His leading.
Reflection:
When you’re feeling uncertain and your heart is full of worry, do you find yourself trying to take charge, or are you open to pausing for a moment and trusting God? What is one practical way you can remind yourself, in the midst of your daily busyness, to put God first?
Prayer:
Father God, in this uncertain world, my heart is often anxious and restless, and I tend to rely on myself to stay in control. Help me, in times of pressure and uncertainty, to slow down and lift my eyes to You again. Give me a quiet and listening heart, willing to follow Your Word rather than my emotions. No matter how circumstances change, remind me that You are still sovereign and always providing. May my life not only be about getting things done, but about honouring You in every moment. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
