We live in an age of abundant information, including access to biblical knowledge. With just a few taps on our phones, we can access countless sermons, podcasts, Bible studies, and devotionals. Many Christians today can know more about the Bible than believers in previous generations ever could.
Yet Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a sobering reminder: hearing His words is not enough.
After teaching about life in God’s kingdom, Jesus says, “”Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”” The difference between the wise and foolish builders is not that one heard Jesus while the other did not. Both heard His teaching. Both built a house. Outwardly, they may even have looked very similar. The difference lay beneath the surface—in whether they acted on what they heard.
It is possible to admire Jesus’ teaching without obeying it. We can study Scripture faithfully, attend church regularly, participate in Bible studies, and even agree wholeheartedly with biblical truth, yet fail to let that truth shape the way we speak, forgive, love, give, or respond to difficult people. Knowledge without obedience gives a false sense of security.
The late John Stott observes that neither an intellectual knowledge of Christ nor a verbal profession of faith can ever substitute for obedience. The issue is not whether we know the right doctrines or say the right things about Jesus. The real question is whether His lordship is evident in the way we live each day.
That is why Jesus describes the obedient person as wise. Building on rock requires more effort than building on sand. It means allowing God’s Word to challenge our attitudes, reshape our priorities, and change our behaviour. Obedience is often costly and unseen, much like a house’s foundation hidden beneath the ground. But when the storms of life inevitably come, the strength of that foundation is revealed.
Every time we hear God’s Word, we are invited to make a choice. Will we simply admire it, or will we obey it? The Christian life is not measured by how much Scripture we know, but by how faithfully we live it. A life built on obedience is a life built on Christ—the only foundation that will stand firm through every trial.

Prayer：
Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times we have been content merely to hear Your Word without putting it into practice. Give us humble and obedient hearts that respond not only with understanding but with action. Help us to build our lives on the solid foundation of Christ by obeying His teaching each day. May our faith be seen not only in what we say, but in how we live, so that we may remain steadfast through every trial and bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
