Isaiah 9:1-7

We have probably all experienced something like this. When we first arrive at a new school or workplace, or visit an unfamiliar place, it is easy to feel lost. Where is the entrance? Which way should we go? What are we supposed to do next? Just when we have no idea where to begin, someone comes to meet us, shows us around and points us in the right direction. We breathe a sigh of relief. This person knows the way and what to do, and is willing to walk with us.
The people in Isaiah’s time were also living in darkness, unable to see a way forward. Ahaz was king at the time. Aram and the northern kingdom of Israel had joined forces to attack Judah, while the powerful Assyrian Empire continued to expand. Judah faced the threat of war, yet King Ahaz refused to trust God. Fear hung over the whole nation, and no one knew what the future would hold. In the middle of this crisis, God gave them this promise: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.”
The light God promised would come through a King: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.” He is the “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Earthly kings may disappoint us, but the King God gives is always trustworthy. He will rule with justice and righteousness, lift the burden from His people, and bring true and lasting peace.
This King is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He came into our world, a world filled with sin and suffering. He bore our sins, rose from the dead, and defeated sin and death. Today, war, suffering and injustice still remain. In our own lives, we may fall ill, lose someone we love, or face changes we never saw coming. Yet Jesus has come, and He walks with us. He will lead us all the way to the day when His kingdom of justice and peace comes in its fullness.
We often want to see the whole road clearly before we dare to move forward. But God invites us to trust Jesus and follow Him one step at a time. Our circumstances may not change immediately, but we do not have to find our way alone. He knows the road ahead and is able to lead us all the way to the end.

2. Knowing that Jesus, our loving and just King, walks with you, how can you trust Him as you take the next step today?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, when I feel afraid because I cannot see what lies ahead, help me turn to Jesus and trust Him to lead me. Thank You for sending Jesus, the King You promised. He is our light in the darkness and our peace in troubled times. When the world feels dark and nothing seems to change, keep me from losing heart. Remind me that Jesus has come, that He is with me, and that He reigns forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
