Numbers 33 records in detail the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness over forty years. From their departure out of Egypt to the edge of the Promised Land, each stage of their journey is carefully listed. While it may seem like a simple record of names of places, it is in fact a retelling of Israel’s “history of salvation.”

These forty years were not easy. The wilderness was marked by lack, danger, complaints, failure, as well as death and discipline. The Israelites were often weak and rebellious, even longing to return to Egypt. Yet God never abandoned them. He led them, provided for them, and protected them. And through discipline, He shaped them.

The wilderness was not merely a place of wandering. It was a place where lives were formed. God not only brought them out of Egypt, but He also taught them, over time, to trust, obey, and give thanks.

When we look back on our own lives, there are seasons that feel like the wilderness—uncertain paths, disrupted plans, and an unclear future. Yet in hindsight, we often see that God was present all along. Those difficult seasons became moments where His grace was most deeply experienced.

Looking back at the history of Foochow Methodist Church, from the beginning of Foochow worship in 1897 through the forty years leading up to 1936, the church did not have a permanent place of worship. Yet the work of the gospel never ceased. God continued to preserve His people, enabling believers to gather, worship, and pass on the faith.

Those forty years can be seen as the church’s “wilderness season.” There was lack, yet there was dependence on God. There were challenges, yet there was grace. Through those years, God shaped the church’s resilience and faith.

The 129 years of history remind us that the true foundation of the church is not a building, but God’s presence. What sustains the church is not human strength, but God’s faithfulness.

Today, we may face changing times and challenges in passing on the faith. Yet the same God who led Israel and sustained the church through the wilderness continues to lead His people today. Looking back is not merely an act of remembrance but an invitation to anchor our faith in God again and to move forward with hope.

Reflection:
As you reflect on your life and the history of the church, do you see that even in the “wilderness” seasons, God has never left you and has been shaping you as His people?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for faithfully leading Your people through the years. Whether in the forty years of Israel’s wilderness journey or in the early years of Foochow Methodist Church marked by lack and uncertainty, You have never abandoned Your people. Thank You for sustaining, providing, and shaping us by Your grace. Help us remember Your faithfulness and continue walking with You through the challenges we face today. May we remain a people who glorify You and bear witness to Your grace. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
